What a week… A poorly Pippa

What a week… My goodness!

Our poor little family dog Pippa who is an 8-9 year old rescue miniature schnauzer cross has been very poorly.

Last Monday and Tuesday she was sick on her usual food, so for two days we only have her coley fish to settle her tummy. On the Friday we tried her back on her usual food and sick again literally minutes after taking a mouthful. So off to the vet we go!

Up there for 2 1/2hrs… Blood results (nearly double on digestive enzymes), a (very) tender stomach and the sickness it is pancreatitis and they want to keep her in for the weekend on a drip as she is dehydrated and to start her on antibiotics and pain relief.

So we leave her there…
Her first night away from home since we have had her we are all worried.

We ring in the and it turns out she is not being compliant at all, she had managed to pull the drip out, nip the nurse and had a tantrum and given herself a nose bleed, but she still needs treatment!
So they say to ring back after lunch and they will see if they’ve made in progress if not they will attempt treatment at home!!

to be continued…

She scared me today!

My little old Cinnamon is coming up to seven this year which I think it’s pretty good going.

She always seems to surprise me and even when she looks a bit peaky recovers!

Today I go down to find her snoozing with her head on the door and when I call she doesn’t move a muscle…
Get nearer…
Open the door…
Phew just in a deep sleep and possibly a little deaf.
She has got a little slower this year.. And it may be her last but she will be pampered to the end.

Nutmeg
My gorgeous white and brown agouti, funky guinea pig.
She is Cinnamon’s sister and was bossed around.
Nutmeg’s eyesight was never good i often thought she was blind and that’s why she was always in Cinnamon’s way and often got her ears nipped!
On a trip to the vets they discovered her retinas never formed properly and the consequence being she was practically blind.

That didn’t trouble her she lead an active pampered life and lived to 5 😀
Love her xx

The day it all began…

A nice dry day in mid September 2006, me and my dad went on a road trip pick my lovely grandad up from Birmingham where he had been visiting his youngest daughter and her family.

On the way through we thought we would stop by and surprise my cousin at work, she worked at a little pet shop, one of the quaint and interesting ones where you could dig around and find different things.

I had always loved animals, and had even considered being a vet when I was younger.
My cousin showed us round and out back they had some lovely little bunnies and another cage she hurried us over to. “Please buy the guinea pigs if you don’t, she’s going to let the gypsies have them” she urged. ‘She’ was the owner of the shop and who we hadn’t met. I looked inside this cage to find two gorgeously cute furry little animals, no bigger than hamsters. Oh, I loved them and pestered dad, who loved animals and had grown up with many animals and worked on farms. I knew he would be quiet happy for me to have them ‘as long as you look after them’. Mum however did not like anything that may resemble in anyway a rat, which of course these didn’t they had not tail to start. But,I clearly remembered when I got my hamster that took a lot of persuading. Dad didn’t need persuading he loved animals, so the deal was as long I didn’t say dad let me we were ok and it was on my head with mum. Yayyy!

So I bought them, luckily I had £15 in purse and we got a few extras on the quiet including a rather large bag of food, sawdust, hay etc. Luckily at home I had a three floored hamster cage which would do for now until we got a hutch and off I went happy as a sand bag with my two adorable little friends tucked away safe in a cardboard box.

I was so excited I do not remember much of the rest of that day except thinking of names and taking sneaky peaks into the box when dad wasn’t looking as I mustn’t let them get out while dad was driving! Even Grandad was edging me on on the way back. At the time we had a Citroen Berlingo I remember it well it was zany and had plenty of room, when dad stopped at the services I took the opportunity to get them out and show grandad we were laughing and joking, but suddenly the spiky rough coated one escaped and got under the chairs, I was so scared, dad said I was “lucky to not have cut it’s head off with the chair and it could have chewed an electrical cable” that’s my dad always trying to scare me.

Home we get and now I’ m nervous! I have got to tell mum ek!
She might be mad! She was a bit annoyed…but she loves them now!

Abyssinian Guinea Pigs

I have to say I love the Aby piggies.
All crazy haired haha.

My first and currently only Aby is Florrie (Florentine) named after wintery christmas spiced biscuits, as she has the colours of my two original piggies; Cinnamon and Nutmeg.

She is such a character… A photogenic kung fu guinea pig!
She just doesn’t like being picked up, she sticks her feet out, does a backwords rolypoly anything to not get picked up. When you’ve got her she riggles!!!!
But if you sit down she does enjoy a nice cuddle as long as you don’t mess up her fur!

I would love another Aby a beautiful red one when we finally move!

Today I realised how much I miss having baby piggies…

Guinea pig babies are remarkable and so are their mothers.

For those of you who don’t know about baby piggies they are born fully furred, eyes open and walking all on day one!!

Here is my first and only litter the morning after birth…
(as despite me checking regularly day and night she had them the one night i went out in months to celebrate my birthday!!)

10 Piggies… they rule my life but I still want more.

Meet Cinnamon her and her sister where my first ever guinea pigs!

Before them I had not heard tale of a guinea pig or seen one. But now I would not be without one.
